When federal emission standards started being imposed on all cars sold in North America, most car companies responded by adding air pumps and other hardware, added weight and complexity while losing performance. In 1969, Alfa Romeo responded by fitting fuel injection to their new 1750cc engine. Trouble was, not many American mechanics understood them or knew how to work on them. Many perfectly good fuel injection systems were removed and replaced with carburetors.
Produced from 1966 to 1993, the Alfa Romeo Spider is one of the longest-running production sports cars in classic car history.
